Nightly Homework
Each day/week your child will have homework assignments to complete. Some assignments will be due daily while others are due by the end of the week. Each morning when the students come in the homework will be posted on the board. It is their job to find the correct math page, unclip it from their math binder, and get it into their Homework Folder. We will practice this and I’ll give many reminders in the beginning. Once the students are self-sufficient I will no longer remind them every morning to read the board and get their homework pages. This will become their job and I will not accept “I forgot to pick up the homework” as an excuse for not having it done. Students will also have a Reading and Math assignment on MobyMax given on Fridays and it’ll be due on the following Friday. Math pages will be given daily and due the very next day. Often there is math homework over the weekend. The only time there isn’t math homework is if we have a test. If students earn a Homework Pass it can be used for MobyMax for the week. Homework passes will not be accepted for daily Math pages. Math pages will be checked daily while MobyMax will be checked every Friday morning by 8:00am. Students that do not have their MobyMax points earned by Friday morning will have lunch with me Friday afternoon and we will work on MobyMax while they are eating. Students have multiple opportunities during the school day and week to use MobyMax as well. They should be able to get some of their points earned during the week while they are in school, this leaves less to do at home.
MATH (daily): There will be 1 or 2 math worksheets or math pages with problems on it that must be completed each night. There will usually be a math page to complete over the weekend as well.
READING and MATH MobyMax (weekly): All students have a MobyMax account. MobyMax is an online resource we use to help fill in the gaps in learning. If a student hasn’t mastered a specific skill then it’ll show up on MobyMax for them to work on. In the beginning of the year students take an online assessment in Math and Reading to see where they are starting. The program then gives them a baseline score and any skills they didn’t get 90-100% on in the assessment will show up as lessons in the students account. They complete the lessons and are able to improve their scores over the year. I can also assign specific lessons or skills that we are working on to students and it’ll show up in their account. For homework, on Fridays, students will be assigned Reading and Math to work on for the week. They will be required to earn a certain number of points for it to count as complete for the week. Because it’s assigned on Fridays, students are welcome to work on it over the weekend so they have less to do during the week. The only way to earn points on MobyMax is to do well, if they don’t pass the lesson with a 70% or higher then they will not earn the points. So, if they rush through the assignments it’ll take much longer to earn the required weekly points. I will log in every Friday morning to see who’s completed their MobyMax work for the week, earning the required points, and I’ll log it on LiveSchool and your child’s Weekly Check-In.
Homework is very important as it serves as a review of what we’ve done in class. We go over the math homework each day before we start math class so I do expect it to be complete. Using MobyMax can greatly improve a child’s level over the year if it’s used often. We have seen so much growth from the use of MobyMax because it’s able to go back and teach lessons on skills your child may not have gotten the first time.
If you really want to help your child have a successful start to 4th grade then I highly encourage you to start working with multiplication and division facts now. Students need to know their facts. It would be an excellent idea to purchase or make flash cards. In 3rd grade they are taught how to multiply and divide and what it means to make groups and break groups apart. Then in 4th grade we jump right to multiplying 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers. It helps a student out tremendously if they already have memorized their facts. Thank you so much for your support with homework this year!
