Nightly Homework

Students usually have 3 homework assignments each night. There is only math assigned on Fridays. Each day students will copy their homework into their agendas. Students have a Daily Homework Binder where the homework will come back and forth to class in. Homework is due every morning. If any homework assignments are incomplete then the student will not be able to participate in Fun Friday and they might have working lunch to finish it.

**There will be 1 or 2 math worksheets or math pages with problems on it that must be completed each night. There will usually be a math page to complete over the weekend as well.**__MATH:__**Students need to read for at least 20 minutes every night. There is a Reading Log in their Homework Binder. Students need to write down what they read and write a summary of at least 5 sentences for what they read. The reading log should**__READING LOG:__*in the Homework Binder.*__stay__**There will be 3 different ELA assignments during the week.**__ELA:____Monday & Tuesday__: Students will get a short reading passage that has questions. We are expecting students to use strategies taught in class on this reading passage. Strategies include; underlining, highlighting, annotating, using Thinking Maps, RUNNERS, and WINNNERS. We are expecting students to use the strategies as they read the passage on Monday night. On Tuesday night they should be rereading the passage and answering the questions. The passages will be based on our standards and will directly correspond with the standards we’re teaching each week. This reading passage ELA homework will be due Wednesday morning. Because they are asked to really dig into the passage and use the strategies to get complete answers they are being given 2 nights to complete it.__Wednesday__: Students will be taught several Language standards throughout the year. We try to focus on one each week. Wednesday night’s homework will be a Language worksheet that corresponds directly with the Language standard that we are teaching for that week.__Thursday__: Students will work on defining unknown words all year. They will be taught several Context Clues strategies to do this. Thursday night’s homework will be a Context Clues worksheet to practice finding the definition of an unknown word. Students will need to use a strategy taught in class, identify the strategy they used, then define the unknown words.
